Shhhh. It’s a secret.
Want to follow your calling? Embody your voice.
You know you want to succeed doing your heart’s work and making a difference in the world. That thing – a calling – you’ve got it. It whispers your name in the night, tugs at your soul, and tells you to do things you’re scared to do. So you resist.
But there it is again the next night, next day, next week. Still, you resist.
You know that if you don’t follow that calling, you’ll regret it. You already regret the time you’ve spent serving other people’s dreams (except your kids’ dreams – you love serving your kids’ dreams).
You take a few steps into it. It’s scary, and different, and hard. You back off.
I can’t, you say. I don’t know enough. I’m not good enough. I don’t have enough credentials and certifications. Who am I to think I can _______ ? (Fill in the blank with your calling.)
Those internal stories that hold you back, the insecurities, the fears, the not enoughs – it’s time to shift them, outgrow them, and access the deeper truth of who you are. It’s time to stop playing safe and playing small. It’s time to show up in new ways as your true self, to step out of the shadows into the light, to bring your life into alignment with your deeper truth and your whole, authentic self. It’s time to speak up, speak out and be truly SEEN and HEARD.
I know – tall order.
Resistance says – it’s too much, it’s too hard, it’s not safe, I can’t do it. It also says, I have to do it all by myself.
I’m with you. I’ve heard it all from myself, and I still hear it. I’m a human being, and so are you. Whenever we start to step into something new, different and big, resistance is going to come up. Truthfully? It’s part of life as a human.
Expect it. Embrace it. Work with it, rather than succumbing to it. Get mentoring and coaching.
For me, keeping in mind my larger WHY, my big mission, is what helps me, along with meditation, SoulCollage® and other inner work, connecting with nature, talking to Spirit, and working with my mentors. Also giving myself lots of love and approval, even the resistant parts.
And I practice speaking up and speaking out, especially when I don’t want to. It’s like a muscle – it strengthens with exercise.
Here’s the secret: I’ve discovered in working with my clients that when you embody your authentic voice, it’s a life-changing way to access the deeper truth of who you are, and shift your relationship to resistance so you can actually step into your calling. And if you DON’T fully embody your whole voice, you won’t have the full success you long for.
Why your voice?
Your voice is you. Your voice is your primary instrument of communication and connection. Your authentic, embodied voice is the voice of your soul. When you access your whole voice, you access your whole self.
Most of us don’t use our whole voices. We have shut down parts of our self expression out of things we’ve been told, or that we told ourselves. Parts of us have been shamed, silenced, pushed down, made small, kept quiet.
We women, especially, have been taught that our voices don’t matter as much as men’s, and we’ve been taught to hold our voices back by a culture that devalues feminine values and principles.
As one of my clients said: “The extent to which we hold our voices back mirrors the extent to which we shush who we are. This is really, and literally vital for us.”
For you to step into your calling, you have to step into your whole voice, speak your whole self, reclaim your authentic voice and your right to speak up and speak out as a full partner with men, as a feminine leader.
And I can tell you, if you don’t do it, you won’t have the success you deserve, and your soul will still be tugging on you in the night.
Working with your voice is a sneaky, overlooked, fun and profound way into your whole self and great success in life and business.
Here are some practices to get you started.
- Your body is your instrument. Your voice is produced using muscles, resonance, and air. How you treat your body has everything to do with how well your voice works. Practice belly breathing to calm nerves and create good air flow for your voice. Warm up your body to warm up your voice. Use powerful body postures to give your voice more strength, like standing with feet apart, hands on hips.
- Use lots more expression. Most of us think we’re using more expression in our voices than we are. Play with your voice, and try out sounding “way over the top” to yourself. Most likely, it will be just right.
- GIVE YOURSELF PERMISSION to speak with power and confidence. Give voice to the silenced and shamed parts of yourself. SoulCollage® is a wonderful way to do this.
- Get Coaching. You can’t do it alone. My clients get my 1:1 support in shifting their resistance, opening up their authentic voice, speaking with power and confidence, creating and delivering their compelling signature talk, and living their calling.
